In-depth:

Eye disorders are divided into two groups:

1.      Refractive errors

2.      None refractive errors

Refractive errors:

Refractive errors are disorders in which your eye is unable to focus the light that is entering the eye. It causes blurred vision. Refractive errors are fount 20% in children. Most common refractive errors that affect vision are:

·         Myopia

·         Hyperopia

·         Amblyopia

·         Strabismus

·         Astigmatism

None refractive errors:

These are the disorders that result in other diseases of eyes. Common none refractive errors are:

·         Glaucoma

·         Cataract

·         Retinoblastoma

Amblyopia:

It is the second condition which occurs if the focus of the eye is uneven or eye is misaligned. This usually occurs in one eye. Amblyopia usually happens in result of another vision issue in which eye is not receiving proper stimulations. Treating the underlying issues is the first step which is performed by eye patches, eye drops or special glasses. If underlying causes are treated before your child is 6 years then amblyopia is preventable.

The main purpose of the patches, glasses or eye drops is to clog or blur the vision in the strong eye so the weak eye will not work hard. This will also help to encourage brain so it sends appropriate signals to the weaker eye.

Prescription lenses can help to improve the misalignment of the weaker eye.

If patches, eye drops, lenses, or special glasses failed to correct amblyopia then surgery of eye muscle is recommended by a doctor.

How long will it take to improve your child’s vision:

Treatments for vision improvements last when the weak eye is better. In most cases, children have to wear patches for a year. Just in a few cases, it took a long time as their brain makes new connections slowly.

As a parent, you need to make sure that your child follows his or her treatment.

Patching is hard for children as there will be frustration, meltdowns and tantrums for a few weeks but you need to keep in mind that it is important to restore your child’s eyesight.
